Driftworks Tidal Art
We are Amanda and Alison, we are mixed media artists located on the edge of the Northumberland National Park in Northumberland. We both live and work from our workshop in Rothbury with our two dogs Khali (Golden Doodle) and Lexi (German Wirehaired Pointer)
It all started for us in 2016 whilst walking our dogs on the amazing beaches of Northumberland, stumbling upon, finding, collecting then actively searching and beach combing for driftwood, sea glass and sea pottery. Each piece with its own story to tell.
We made individual pieces of artwork with these treasures from the sea, in the form of seabird sculptures, coastal jewellery and fishing village scenes, initially the scenes we made depicted the Northumbrian coastal villages such as Alnmouth, and Seahouses until we were asked to make commissions for people as far an wide as Dorset and the Highlands.
Its "Art to Make you Smile", that was what many of our very first customers said about our work and indeed at the many craft events and art festivals that we attended we saw people smiling at our work, which in turn made us smile.
Those early events, fairs and festivals turned into showcasing our work in galleries and exhibitions and we also started to have an online presence using mainly Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and YouTube. We now have our work in quite a few galleries and stockists from the Borders of Scotland through Northumberland and into Cheshire in the North West.
In 2018 our focus was more about mixed media as we explored resin, textiles and glass and as we evolved we started working with glass more and more, this is such an exciting medium and to create a piece of art that is then kiln fired up to temperatures of over 800 degrees for over 18 hours is such an interesting and addictive process, it is ever evolving and the creative possibilities are endless.
In late 2020 we started putting our glass into wood and creating a more organic look on many of our pieces which lead us to start the journey of building a website so that we could share our more unique work with you.
